Indonesia:
Project Harapan
When Brian first met Carlos Ferrandiz he recognized a kindred spirit. Besides their shared love of playing in the Ocean waves along the breathtaking coast of Sumbawa, Indonesia, they both found themselves drawn to do something for the local people. Brian was already deeply involved in the community. Referred to as the “Mayor”by the visiting surfers , Brian acted as a liaison between the tourists and the villagers near the Lakey Peak break.
Brian was introduced to Carlos shortly after he quit his lucrative career as an attorney in his native Spain and relocated his life to Sumbawa in order to devote his energy to the unfilled needs he saw around him. Brian saw the passion Carlos brought to the task and connected him with the key members of the local community who could best ensure a solid launch to the ambitious project and a positive reception from the people he hoped to assist.
Harapan’s Mission
What started out as an effort to teach locals English in order to increase their access to tourist dollars has grown into providing services across the full range of the impoverished community’s medical, sanitation, economic and educational needs.
Stick4Change Participation
Returning recently to Sumbawa, Brian was impressed by the enormous strides made by Carlos and his team at the Harapan Project. Stick 4 Change provided a grant of $2500 and obtained another $500 from a generous San Francisco business to support Harapan’s mission. As part of Stick 4 Change’s belief in the power of music to change the world, Brian helped organize a musical instruction program taught by a local musician. Through the generosity of our donors, Stick 4 Change issued a grant of $2000 for a year’s worth of lessons and basic instruments for the children of Hu’u.
We hope our work with the Harapan Project and the children of the Hu’u villages of Sumbawa excites you as much as it does our staff here at Stick 4 Change. Please consider donating to us or directly to Harapan. To learn more about the incredible work Carlos and his team are doing for this Indonesian community follow the link below.
